Today, many places in the world will celebrate National Ageism Awareness Day. This is a day dedicated to shedding light on the pervasive issue of ageism and its impact on individuals across generations. Ageism, the discrimination or prejudice against people based on their age, is a challenge that affects millions worldwide. It's crucial to recognize and address this issue, as ageism can limit opportunities, hinder personal growth, and perpetuate stereotypes. At rocket50, we are committed to empowering people beyond their 50s to thrive in their lives by providing the tools that people need to succeed in their careers, entrepreneurship, retirement. We believe that when people can flourish in all stages of their lives, there is no longer a place in our society where ageism can exist.

On this special day, let's explore five meaningful ways individuals can join the movement to raise awareness about ageism and promote a society that values people of all ages.

1. Educate Yourself and Others
A 2021 report from the World Health Organization (WHO) states that one out of every two people are ageist – this is defined as negatively stereotyping individuals based on their age. This report  revealed that ageism can be found in work, society, healthcare systems, laws and  simply perceptions of individuals of all ages. Imagine, if one out of every two people are ageist, how many people does that leave experiencing ageism every day?

To overcome ageism, we must all tackle this together and actively by:

  • Enacting policies and laws around the world that fight to end stereotypes based on age.
  • Informing society about what ageism is, what the impact is, and from there working to create change for the future.
  • Creating Intergenerational experiences by bringing together groups of many ages, to break down stereotypes that can grow from non-interaction across generations.

Finally, while these are important steps towards building a future world free of ageism, be sure that today you are reflecting on yourself and taking steps you need to be your best you. The more educated you are about ageism, the better you can work towards personally rising above these experiences so they impact you less.

2. Challenge Stereotypes
Ageism often stems from stereotypes and preconceived notions about older individuals. Do you really understand the everyday biases that creep into our thinking and vocabulary? Even things such as “she looks great for her age” or exclaiming in surprise that someone still works at 67. These are comments that are “normal” but in fact put people into boxes that determine what age is supposed to be. Instead, take the time to educate yourself and those around you about the impact of ageism on individuals and society as a whole. Think deeply about your understanding of yourself and how society affects your behavior.
Challenge these stereotypes by engaging in open dialogue and showcasing the diversity of experiences and talents that people over 50 possess. Encourage others to question their own biases and assumptions.

3. Advocate for Equal Opportunities
Support organizations and initiatives that promote equal opportunities for people of all ages. Hire and promote older people in your company. Real change will happen when each of us does something every day to make a difference. At rocket50, our mission is to empower individuals beyond their 50s.  Encourage your friends and colleagues to join our platform, connect with like-minded individuals and access valuable resources to break down age-related barriers.

4. Share Personal Stories:
Personal stories are powerful tools for raising awareness. Encourage older individuals in your world to share their experiences, challenges, and successes with others. By highlighting their accomplishments and resilience, we can inspire others and challenge ageist narratives.

5. Get Involved in Community Initiatives:
Participate in local or national initiatives that promote age-friendly communities and combating ageism. Volunteer with organizations that provide support and resources to older adults or join advocacy groups dedicated to addressing age-related discrimination.

Ageism Awareness Day reminds us that ageism is a social issue that deserves our attention and action. Together, we can combat ageism and create a world where age is celebrated, not discriminated against. Thank you for joining us in this critical mission, and let's make a positive change for all generations.
