The debate about the generation gap is one we are all familiar with - with older and younger generations often failing to understand each other's perspectives (OK, Boomer…)

However, each age group brings their own unique skills, knowledge, and values to the table, so the magic mix is really about older and younger people working together.

In my career counseling practice, I often meet with older job seekers who feel left out and ghosted after interviews but on the other hand struggle with the idea of keeping up with the younger generation's mindset and methods. We know that younger people can benefit from OUR wisdom and experience but in reality, they can only view us through their own eyes and experience and cannot really know what they haven’t experienced yet themselves.

To succeed in landing a new role in the world of younger people it is necessary to put yourself in shoes of the younger generation and when interviewing and networking reach back to when you were in your 30s and try practicing the following techniques:

Open-mindedness

Ego and a lack of willingness to accept new ideas can often prevent older people from embracing change. Younger people, on the other hand, possess a sense of openness that allows them to absorb knowledge and skills with ease. By adopting a more open-minded and eager approach, when listening to young people, we can benefit from their fresh perspectives and innovative ideas that younger people bring to the table.

Stay true to your dreams

Another important lesson that older people can learn from the younger generation is the importance of staying true to one's dreams and aspirations. As we grow older, we often find ourselves burdened with responsibilities and commitments that pull us away from our original goals. Young people on the other hand, have their whole future ahead of them and can remind us of the  passion, courage, and drive that we used to have. By reconnecting to your dreams and aspirations, you can reignite your sense of purpose and excitement about what you can do now and in the future.

Have a sense of purpose

Today’s younger people in particular are known to stand up for what they believe in. It is something that older individuals can learn from. A strong sense of purpose provides motivation, direction, and focus, allowing people to prioritize their actions and make meaningful contributions. By embracing a sense of purpose, you as an older individual can infuse your life  with passion, innovation, and commitment.

In conclusion, to reduce the age barrier between you as the older job seeker or work colleague, put yourself in the shoes of the younger person and then combine that with all your know-how. Because whether you are young or old, we all have something to gain from listening and learning from each other.

Embrace the wisdom of the past and the energy of the future as you look for what’s next for you!
