How did you refine your career path after you turned 50 or beyond?

I started my career in interior design and sales.  The year I turned 50 the family business I worked for had a leadership crisis and the owner of the company asked me to step in.  This year I was promoted to President.  Now I work hardly at all in the field I went to college for, but still use the skills I gained over the years in different ways. I use the same creative muscles, but now instead of using them to design spaces, I use them to chart a course for the team.

How did you identify that you needed to change careers, what was the most helpful resource during this time?

Honestly, it wasn't a change that I sought.  I took the role to help the company and my boss, but I grew into it.  I just tried to be transparent about where I had knowledge gaps and my team supported me.  I also took every opportunity to learn from industry colleagues, through books, webinars, and industry training.

What was the greatest help to you during your career transition?

I took a course from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry called "Building a Better Business".  It helped me dig deep into every department of the company, evaluating what we do, and comparing it to standard practices to see where we were superior and where I needed more understanding.

Looking back, what are you most thankful for when it comes to your career path and journey?

I'm grateful for all of my past jobs, and the opportunity I had to learn different facets of my industry.  But hands down, my current team is my best support.  We have been through a lot together, a leadership transition, COVID-19, and industry challenges, and we trust each other.  I couldn't do it without them.

What advice would you give to someone in a career change?

Don't be afraid to suck at something for a little while.  Let your ego go, and learn all you can, from everyone you can.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your journey?

Things can change quickly.  At 49 I divorced my former husband, at 50 I became Vice President and now at 54, I am President of the company where I've worked for 23 years.  Before that though, I went through 6 employers.  Leaving each of them when it was clear that I had reached the highest level of value they saw in me.  No job (and no relationship) is perfect, but there are good fits and bad fits.  Find your good fit.
